Meta Explores Cloud Business to Monetize Growing AI Infrastructure

Meta Explores Cloud Business to Monetize Growing AI Infrastructure

Key Highlights

  • Meta is reportedly exploring cloud deals to sell excess AI compute capacity.
  • The move could put pressure on AI-focused cloud providers like CoreWeave and Nebius.
  • Investors reacted positively as Meta looks for new revenue streams beyond advertising.

Meta is reportedly looking to turn some of its massive AI infrastructure investments into a business opportunity by offering cloud services built around excess compute capacity.

The development comes after a year of aggressive spending on artificial intelligence, with analysts estimating Meta’s total spending could hit $145 billion in 2026.

That investment has largely gone into building advanced data centers and expanding AI capabilities across the company’s platforms.

Now, reports suggest Meta has more computing power than it currently needs and is exploring deals to rent that capacity out.

Meta Looks to Diversify Beyond Advertising

For years, Meta’s AI investments have mostly supported its core products, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The company has used AI to improve ad targeting, build creative tools for marketers, and strengthen consumer-facing products like its smart glasses developed with Ray-Ban.

But advertising still accounts for nearly all of Meta’s revenue.

That’s why investors have been watching closely for signs of broader monetization.

The cloud move appears to be one of Meta’s biggest attempts yet to build a new business around AI infrastructure.

Following the reports, Meta’s stock reportedly climbed around 9%, reversing some recent weakness.

Pressure Builds for AI-native Cloud Firms

Meta’s entry into cloud services could create new competition for smaller AI-focused infrastructure providers.

One company drawing attention is CoreWeave, which has been one of Meta’s infrastructure partners.

Last year, CoreWeave signed a multibillion-dollar agreement with Meta tied to Nvidia-powered systems through 2031.

That relationship may continue, but Meta’s shift into selling compute could also put it into more direct competition with firms like CoreWeave.

Another company feeling the impact is Nebius, the Amsterdam-based AI cloud company founded by former Yandex executive Arkady Volozh.

Both companies are often described as “neoclouds”, a term used for AI-native cloud platforms built specifically for large model training and inference.

Bigger AI Infrastructure Deals Continue to Emerge

Meta’s cloud push comes as demand for AI compute continues to rise across the industry.

Recent deals, including xAI leasing massive infrastructure for Anthropic, show how valuable large-scale compute has become.

As competition grows, Meta appears to be positioning itself not just as an AI builder, but as an infrastructure provider too.
