Key Highlights
- OpenAI is prioritizing business users to drive revenue growth.
- Rival Anthropic is intensifying competition in enterprise AI solutions.
- A new model for high-value professional work is expected soon.
OpenAI is shifting its strategic focus toward enterprise users as it seeks a clearer path to profitability in the competitive artificial intelligence market.
The company, widely known for its ChatGPT chatbot, is increasingly emphasizing workplace applications such as summarizing emails and internal communications. According to Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar, this transition reflects growing demand from businesses looking to integrate AI into daily operations.
While ChatGPT has amassed more than 900 million weekly users, most do not pay for the service. This imbalance has highlighted the need for enterprise adoption to support the high computing costs required to run advanced AI systems.
New AI Model Aimed at Professional Use
As part of its enterprise push, OpenAI is preparing to launch a new AI model designed specifically for professional applications. The model, internally codenamed “Spud,” is expected to offer improved reasoning, better understanding of complex tasks, and more reliable outputs in production environments.
The move comes as competition intensifies with Anthropic, which has already gained traction with corporate customers through its Claude AI models.
Revenue Mix Shifts Toward Enterprise
Enterprise customers are becoming an increasingly important revenue source for OpenAI. Friar noted that business users accounted for about 20% of revenue in 2024, but that figure has now risen to 40% and is projected to reach 50% by the end of the year.
This shift has also led the company to scale back some consumer-focused initiatives. Projects such as the AI video generator Sora have been deprioritized as OpenAI reallocates resources toward enterprise solutions.
CEO Sam Altman has emphasized the importance of narrowing focus, noting that rapid growth can lead companies to pursue too many initiatives at once.
Intensifying Competition With Anthropic
The rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic is becoming a defining factor in the AI industry. Both companies are heavily investing in advanced models while facing pressure to generate sustainable revenue.
Anthropic has positioned itself strongly in enterprise markets, particularly among software developers. Its latest offerings, including Claude Mythos and Opus 4.7, highlight its focus on high-performance AI systems.
At the same time, both companies remain unprofitable despite high valuations, intensifying the urgency to secure paying customers.
High Costs and Industry Concerns Persist
Despite rapid adoption, the financial sustainability of the AI industry remains under scrutiny. Both companies face high infrastructure costs tied to energy-intensive computing systems.
Critics warn that businesses relying heavily on AI platforms could face challenges if pricing models change or service limitations are introduced.
Even as competition drives innovation, the long-term viability of large-scale AI deployment will depend on balancing performance, accessibility, and cost.
